At Medical Aesthetics Ann Arbor we have helped women and men across Washtenaw County get rid of lines and furrows, and look younger with Botox injections. In this article we answer our patients most commonly asked questions about Botox Injections!
How Long does Getting Botox® Take?
The actual process of injecting the Botox usually takes less than a half hour! However, allow extra time so that Dr. Platt can assess your skin, discuss your specific treatment goals, and determine the best injection sites for you.
How Many Botox “Shots” Will I Need?
The number of Botox shots Dr. Platt administers will depend upon the area(s) being treated as well as the extent and depth of the lines.
To treat “crow’s feet” with Botox, a typical treatment may involve injections into 3 areas of the “orbicularis oculi” muscle that frames the side of each eye.
For “elevens” (frown lines) between the eyes, the doctor may need to administer 3 to 7 injections. Forehead lines may require 8 to 10 or more injections.
Do Botox® Injections Hurt?
Botox is injected with a fine gauge needle, so patients might feel a slight sting or “pinch” – but it is not painful. The needle used to inject Botox is actually much tinier than those you are used to when you get a vaccination or flu shot!
We use an icepack to numb the injection area. Our patients’ comfort during any treatment in our Ann Arbor Med Spa is always our top priority!
Is there a Recovery Time after Botox Injections?
Patients can general resume their daily activities without interruption after getting Botox. In fact, many patients at our Ann Arbor Med Spa even get Botox on their lunch hour – and then go back to work for the rest of the day!
There are some simple guidelines you should follow after Botox treatment:
1. Do not lie down for at least 4 hours;
2. No vigorous exercise for 24 hours; and,
3. Do not rub the area for 24 hours.
How Long until I See My Botox Results?
Every patient reacts to Botox slightly differently. But most patients will typically begin to notice substantial improvement in lines and wrinkles within 3 to 5 days after their Botox injections.
Patients with stronger facial muscles (including men) may take somewhat longer to see the full Botox treatment’s effects. It can take up to 14 days for full results to become completely apparent.
This slight delay results from the time it takes for the body to start reacting to the muscle-paralyzing properties of the botulinum.
Individuals with deeply etched wrinkles, and older persons being injected for the first time, may take longer or require repeated treatments. However, a dermal filler can be used to plump out the deep lines in the skin in the meantime, until the Botox takes full effect.
Can Men Get Botox?
Yes! In 2016 almost half a million men had some type of cosmetic Botox treatment ― in fact, about 10% of Botox users are men. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported in a recent study that between the years of 2000 and 2015 the number of men who received injections increased by more than three hundred percent.
Most men, however, prefer to get their Botox injections in a discreet and private medical facility. At Medical Aesthetics Ann Arbor, all of our patients are treated with complete privacy, confidentiality, and discretion.

What is Bellafill?
Bellafill® is a smooth, collagen-based dermal filler with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres. The collagen gel in Bellafill® provides immediate volume and lift to correct wrinkles and acne scars. Once injected, these microspheres stay in place and create a base that provides structural support for smoother-looking skin. Bellafill is the only dermal filler that stimulates collagen growth long term to help maintain your youthful appearance for up to 5 years. Now, you can look your best without wasting time and money on frequent filler injections.
Features & Benifits
Bellafill’s tiny, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres are suspended within a base of smooth collagen gel. Once injected, the collagen gel immediately reduces the look of smile lines. Over time, your body uses the microspheres in Bellafill to create a “scaffold” onto which your own natural collagen can develop. This collagen forms a foundation that adds volume to wrinkles, reducing their appearance – and giving you natural-looking results that feel soft and smooth for up to 5 years.
Bellafill replaces lost volume in the skin below the indentation for correction that is both immediate and lasting.
What is the down time?
You can return to your normal activities right away. However, you may experience some temporary swelling, redness, pain, bruising, lumps or bumps, itching, and discoloration at the treatment site. Keep in mind that these symptoms are usually temporary, resolving within 1 to 7 days.
Ann Arbor’s Best Bellafill
Whether you are fighting volume loss or acne scarring the collagen gel in Bellafill provides immediate volume and lift to correct wrinkles and acne scars. Once injected, these microspheres stay in place and create a base that provides structural support for smoother-looking skin. Schedule an appointment at our Ann Arbor Medical Spa and get the results you desire.

What does an EMSCULPT treatment feel like?
The EMSCULPT procedure feels like an intensive workout. You can lay down and relax during the treatment.
Is there any downtime or pre/post treatment preparation with EMSCULPT?
EMSCULPT is non-invasive and requires no recovery time or any pre/post treatment preparation.

At Medical Aesthetics Ann Arbor we have helped women and men across Washtenaw County get rid of line & wrinkles, acne, clogged pores, and other skin imperfections with chemical peels. In this article we answer our patients most commonly asked questions about the chemical peel procedure!
What is the Best Type of Chemical Peel?
Chemical peels are not “one-size-fits-all” – and different formulas and ingredients are better suited to treating different types of skin conditions. The best type of chemical peel will depend upon your specific skin issues.
For example chemical peels containing lactic acid are typically a good treatment for women with dry skin who are looking for anti-aging benefits, such as wrinkles reduction under the eyes and around the mouth. While chemical peels containing salicylic acid are ideal for treating heavily clogged pores and acne.
That is why it is important to consult with a medical skincare professional. You want to ensure that your chemical peel treatments are specially selected to meet your unique, individual skin care needs.
Can Chemical Peels be Performed on the Body?
Any part of the body can be treated with a mild to medium strength chemical peel. Typically peels comprised of a combination of trichloroacetic acid and glycolic acid are used on the body, in a slightly stronger concentration than when used on the face.
Body peels can effectively address the effects of sun damage on the neck, chest, shoulders or arms – and can even be used on the abdominal area to minimize stretch marks.
However deep (phenol containing) peels are typically only appropriate for use on the face.
Do Chemical Peels Hurt?
In general, patients feel nothing stronger than a mild stinging sensation during chemical peels.
At Medical Aesthetics Ann Arbor, we take our patients’ comfort very seriously and do everything possible to ensure a comfortable and pain free chemical peel.
Does the Skin Literally “Peel” Off?
Yes and no. It is actually more of a “flaking” process than an actual “peeling” process. The treatment does remove the outer layers of skin, to reduce or eliminate imperfections. However, the treated layers of skin will gradually flake away (rather than peel off) following treatment, revealing a fresh new layer of skin underneath.
Ann Arbor’s Best Chemical Peels
Whether you are fighting the lines & wrinkles of aging, or you have dark spots, clogged pores, or acne you wish to treat, schedule a chemical peel appointment at our Ann Arbor Med Spa. We will select the best chemical peel formula for your skin issues. You will be amazed at what a peel can do for your skin!
At Medical Aesthetics Ann Arbor we have helped women and men across Washtenaw County get smoother, clearer more attractive skin with IPL Photo Rejuvenation. In this article we answer our patients most commonly asked questions about IPL Photorejuvenation treatments!
What Can IPL Photorejuvenation Treat?
IPL Photo Rejuvenation is a highly effective treatment for patients with rosacea, or blotchy, freckled, sun-damaged, or discolored skin. It is also an excellent treatment for damage caused by aging or sun damage.
How Does IPL Photorejuvenation Work?
IPL™ Photorejuvenation is a procedure in which intense pulses of light are used to penetrate deep into the skin. This then causes the collagen and blood vessels below the top layers of skin to contract and tighten, reducing both the visible redness and lines and wrinkles.
The procedure simultaneously removes the damaged skin for a clearer complexion.
Additionally, the IPL light also stimulates the body’s production of collagen, which then fills in wrinkles and lines, and restores the skin’s smoothness and supple texture.
Who is a Good Candidate for IPL Photorejuvenation?
IPL is most ideal for patients with white, untanned skin that is still somewhat elastic. Patients with darker skin tones may be better suited by other skin resurfacing procedures.
And, patients who already have heavy facial lines, or more severe acne scars, may wish to consider a more aggressive skin smoothing and restoration treatment, such as a chemical peel or laser resurfacing.
Every skincare appointment at our Ann Arbor Med Spa begins with an evaluation of your skin type and conditions. We will help you determine if IPL Photorejuvenation, or another skincare procedure, is best for you.
Does IPL Photorejuvenation Hurt?
Because IPL Photorejuvenation is non-invasive and non-surgical there is no real pain – and typically only minimal discomfort. At most, some patients report that the IPL light pulses feel like the light “snap” from a rubber band.
How Many IPL Photorejuvenation Treatments Will I Need?
Most patients see substantial results after one treatment. However, some patients only require a single treatment, while others may need multiple IPL Photorejuvenation sessions.
The number of sessions you will need will depend on the area being treated, as well as the type and severity of the skin problem. Between three and five IPL treatments is fairly common for many skin conditions.
Is there a Recovery Time after IPL Photorejuvenation?
No there is no real “downtime” after IPL Photorejuvenation. The most common side effects are simply redness and minor swelling. These generally go away within a few hours – or at most last a day or two after treatment.

Whether you are fighting the signs of aging, or have redness, discoloration, freckles or wrinkles you wish to eliminate, schedule a IPL Photorejuvenation appointment at our Ann Arbor Med Spa and see what this revolutionary skin treatment can do for you!
At Medical Aesthetics Ann Arbor we have helped women and men across Washtenaw County say goodbye shaving, plucking, tweezing and waxing – and get smooth, touchable skin with FDA approved laser hair removal.
In this article we answer some of our patients most commonly asked questions about Laser Hair Removal.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser Hair Removal uses gentle pulses of energy to target the melanin or “pigment” in the hair follicle while leave the surrounding skin unaffected – ensuring the highest level of safety and comfort. The laser’s heat effectively destroys the individual hair follicles – so hair does not return.
We use state-of-the-art Quanta hair removal lasers. They are currently the only dual wavelength diode laser, which enables it to target both the melanin (pigment) and the vascular supply (blood vessels) in the follicle.
Quanta hair removal lasers are the fastest hair reduction diode lasers on the market. The result is superior hair reduction results, at the fastest speeds, with the least discomfort.
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Most patients do not find laser hair removal painful. Many patients report that it feel like a slight pin prick, or rubber band snapping sensation, when the laser emits a pulse.
Also, everyone agrees that it is far, far less painful than waxing or tweezing! And patients also universally agree that any mild discomfort during the treatment is more than worth it for being able to get rid of unwanted hair.
We do everything possible to ensure a relaxing and comfortable hair removal experience in our Ann Arbor Med Spa – including applying ice packs for extra comfort during the Laser Hair Removal process.
Why are Multiple Sessions of Laser Hair Removal Necessary?
Hair goes through 3 different cycles of growth – with individual hairs being in different growth phases at different times. The “Anagen” stage of hair growth – when the follicles have a targetable blood supply – is the stage in which Laser Hair Removal treatment works best. During the “Catagen” and “Telogen” stages of hair growth the follicles are dormant and do not have a blood supply.
Each Laser Hair Removal treatment, including the first one, will have long lasting effects. But repeated Laser Hair Removal treatments are necessary in order to catch the different individual hairs during the optimal Anagen stage of hair growth.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
Laser treatments safely, effectively, comfortably and permanently remove hair from men and women anywhere on the body, including: the lip, chin, cheeks, between the brows, legs, back, chin, neck, chest, and bikini area (including “Brazilian”).
Lighter skin with dark hair is optimal for Laser Hair Removal. Coarse dark hair contains the most melanin, or dark pigment, which attracts the laser light allowing the hair follicles to be destroyed. So fewer Laser Hair Removal sessions are needed for dark hair.
Darker skinned people can also get laser hair removal, but it may require more treatments. And people with tanned skin are asked to stop tanning, and allow their tan to fade before starting Laser Hair Removal.

At Medical Aesthetics Ann Arbor we have women and men across Washtenaw County achieve smoother, younger looking skin with Erbium laser skin resurfacing. In this article we answer our patients’ most commonly asked questions about the laser skin resurfacing procedure!
What is Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing Used For?
Fractional erbium laser resurfacing offers improvement in both skin texture, thickness, smoothness and tone.
By removing surface skin damage, the laser actually reverses photo-aging and sun damage, removes fine lines on the face, neck, chest, and hands, and smooths acne scarring.
How does Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?
The erbium lasers we use are “fractionated ablative lasers.” This means that the laser beam is separated into a grid of tiny individual laser beams that create microscopic injuries to the top layer of skin.
These tiny “micro-injuries” stimulate the body’s own natural collagen and elastin production – rejuvenating the skin. As the skin becomes plumper and more elastic, it is “remodeled” into a smoother texture, with better tone. Recovery time is generally 5-7 days.
Why is Erbium Fractional Laser Better than Other Types of Lasers?
Because only a “fraction” of the skin is treated at one time – rather than layering the entire surface like traditional lasers – the Erbium healing process is more rapid. In fact, in most cases, patients are completely recovered and back to their normal activities within 3 to 5 days of their treatment.
Additionally, because only a grid of tiny laser wounds are created – rather than ablating the entire surface – Erbium Fractional Laser Resurfacing is much less painful than traditional CO2 laser skin treatments.
Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Hurt?
For your complete comfort, Erbium laser skin resurfacing treatments are performed using a topical anesthetic.
Who is a Good Candidate for Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing works best for patients with superficial to moderately deep lines and wrinkles, or who have sun damage, brown spots or acne scars. It is effective on men and women of virtually any age.
However, patients who are pregnant, are prone to scars or keloids, or who have certain types of darker skin or hyperpigmentation, should choose other treatments.
But most adults in good health who desire effective skin rejuvenation – with less pain and a shorter recovery period – are a good candidate.

At Medical Aesthetics Ann Arbor we have helped women and men across Washtenaw County permanently get rid of dark spots and spider veins using laser treatments – without injections and without surgery.
In this article we answer some of our patients most frequently asked questions about laser spider vein removal.
What Causes Spider Veins?
A hereditary predisposition to weak vein walls is the main reason that people develop spider veins. In fact, if you have developed a spider veins, there is a 60 to 80% chance that someone else in your family already has these same vein problems.
The normal aging process increases the likelihood of spider veins. And people with fair skin are more likely to have visible spider veins than those individuals with darker skin tones.
Other contributing factors can also accelerate the development of spider veins, including trauma to the area, pregnancy, birth control pills, a sedentary lifestyle, and even obesity. Prolonged sitting or standing can also contribute to the development of spider veins in the legs.
How Do Laser Treatments Remove Spider Veins?
Laser Vein Treatments use a handheld applicator to deliver targeted pulses of energy to the veins. The heat causes the blood in the vein to coagulate. The blocked vein then collapses, and is permanently destroyed. As the body absorbs and eliminates the destructed vein, the blood supply in the area is redirected through other veins that are not visible on the skin’s surface.
How is Laser Different than Other Vein Removal Treatments?
Laser Vein Removal is non-invasive and fast, without the need for painful injections or incisions.
Unlike Laser Vein Removal, during sclerotherapy vein treatments a needle is used to inject each vein multiple times with a sclerosis inducing solution. Unlike laser vein treatment, sclerotherapy can be very painful. Vein stripping is surgical procedure for larger, varicose type veins that involves incisions – so that the surgeon can tie or clamp off the veins at the top.
Laser vein removal, however, is non-invasive with neither injections nor incisions.
Does Laser Vein Removal Hurt?
Laser Vein Removal is not painful, and most patients report little or no discomfort. Other patients report a mild stinging or “snapping” sensation (like a rubber band) when the laser pulse is delivered.
We take every step in our Ann Arbor Med Spa to ensure that you are comfortable, relaxed and happy during your laser vein removal treatment.
Is there Recovery Time after Laser Vein Removal?
Since Laser Vein Removal is non-invasive, there is no “downtime” and patients can resume most normal activities almost immediately. However, patients should generally refrain from strenuous activities for at least 24 hours, and avoid exercise for 2 to 3 days after the treatment.
Additionally, hot baths, hot tubs and hot showers on the treated area should also be avoided for at least the first 24 hours after Laser Vein Removal.

If you are suffering from dark spots or ugly spider veins on the face, legs, arms, or other areas, schedule an appointment at our Ann Arbor Med Spa and see if laser vein or dark spot removal is right for you!
At Medical Aesthetics Ann Arbor we have helped women and men across Washtenaw County look younger with non-surgical microneedling. In this article we answer our patients’ most commonly asked questions about the microneedling procedure!
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a relatively new, state-of-the-art, minimally-invasive, highly effective treatment for fighting the signs of aging, reducing wrinkles, smoothing scars, and resurfacing the skin.
The Microneedling procedure is performed with a SkinPen, a medical grade skin-needling device containing extremely fine-gauge needles. The provider makes small skin punctures with the needles, which promotes skin cell generation.
How does Microneedling Work?
A medical grade microneedling device is used to push through roughly 1.5 to to 3 mm of skin layers, creating tiny wounds. This triggers the body’s own healing mechanisms, stimulating the production of elastin fibers and collagen and improving blood flow to the skin.
As a result, the skin becomes plumper and more elastic, diminishing the appearance of lines, wrinkles, and scars.
What Conditions can Microneedling Treat or Improve?
Some of the conditions that Microneedling can treat and dramatically improve are: fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, poor skin texture, large pores, acne scarring, and even stretch marks.
What Happens During the Microneedling Appointment?
Patients can expect the Microneedling appointment to begin with a careful assessment of the skin, followed by cleaning and anesthetizing of the areas to be treated. Prior to beginning the treatment, a numbing cream will be applied to the skin to minimize any discomfort during the Microneedling procedure.
The provider then uses a small needling device containing “micro-gauge” needles to administer hundreds of miniscule pin-prick wounds into the skin.
What is the Recovery Time After Microneedling?
There is no downtime with Microneedling, so you can resume your normal activities immediately.
Some slight, temporary inflammation may occur immediately following the microneedling procedure but it should reduce significantly within a few hours. In the first 24 hours to 2 days after your Microneedling treatment in our Ann Arbor Med Spa patients may experience minor redness or swelling of the treated area. Typically any redness will be no more severe than a mild sunburn.
Simply try to avoid the sun for a day or two. After that, always apply sunscreen during sun exposure to protect your skin from further photo damage.
Typically it is fine to apply foundation and makeup the next day. Your provider will let you know how soon you can return to wearing makeup following your microneedling procedure.
Within the next several months, as the skin develops new collagen and elastin you will notice the full result of the microneedling treatment, and your skin will look better, younger and smoother.

Energy Based Skin renewal
Plasma IQ is the latest advancement in aesthetics that delivers focused, controlled plasma energy to safely and effectively create microinjuries on the skin, renewing and restoring it.
Microbeams of plasma are leveraged in a focused energy treatment, resulting in tightening and retraction of the skin tissues through controlled skin damage.
Safe, Quick and Effective
> Plasma IQ has a low risk of side effects. Extreme device precision and controlled energy settings limit the damage of surrounding skin, reduce downtime and improve healing.
> Plasma IQ treatment can be performed in-office in as little as 30 minutes, depending on the area(s) treated.
> Two levels of energy allow for safe and effective treatments for a variety of indications and areas. Plasma IQ delivers the precise amount of energy desired using the high (950V) or low (650V) settings during treatment.
How it works
IONIZED GAS PARTICLES As the device is brought close to the skin during treatment, it ionizes nitrogen gas particles in the air to create a plasma arc that looks like a spark.
SKIN RETRACTION AND REACTION The plasma arc causes sublimation of the epidermis of the skin; turning a solid into gas, resulting in immediate skin tightening and retraction in the target area. This method of plasma sublimation is highly targeted and controlled. It does not transfer heat to the surrounding area.
The procedure creates tiny brown carbon crusts or scabs in the treated area that persist for approximately one week before dropping off.
HEALING RESPONSE The microinjuries sustained during treatment promote the long-term firming, tightening, and smoothing effects that are part of the natural healing response.
Ann Arbor’s Best Plasma IQ
Using a laser for skin tightening and repair is not always appropriate. That's where Plasma IQ comes in. Upper and Lower eyelids and around your mouth are a few of the areas where this device works best. Schedule an appointment at our Ann Arbor Medical Spa and see if Plasma IQ can give you the best results.
