Why Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing is Better than CO2 Lasers
There are many methods of “resurfacing” the skin to reduce wrinkles, eliminate scars and get rid of dark spots and discoloration. The majority of these procedures resurface the skin by removing the outer layer of dead and damaged skin cells and contaminants, and stimulating the body’s production of collagen and elastin.
For many years CO2 Lasers were the most advanced method of skin resurfacing. But CO2 lasers also had many undesirable side effects, such as pain, redness and a long recovery period. However, a newer skin resurfacing technology that uses “fractionated” lasers now provides a superior skin resurfacing experience.
In this article we explain why we prefer Erbium Fractionated Laser over older CO2 lasers for skin resurfacing in our Ann Arbor Medical Spa.
Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing has Less Downtime
The Erbium laser removes the thinnest layer of skin tissue possible – much thinner than CO2 lasers. Additionally, fractionated lasers generate minimal heat compared to CO2, which causes less skin damage.
The result is that the recovery time is much faster with Erbium fractionated laser than with than with CO2 lasers.
With CO2 laser resurfacing, skin may be extremely red and even scab over for up to three weeks. However, patients undergoing Erbium treatments can resume wearing make-up in less than a week, and the skin will remain pinkish for only a week or so.
Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing is Less Painful
Additionally, because only a grid of tiny laser “wounds” are created – rather than ablating the entire surface – Erbium Fractional Laser Resurfacing is much less painful than traditional CO2 laser skin treatments.
Because Erbium lasers resurface the skin by removing a thinner layer with less heat damage, the procedure is also less painful than traditional CO2 lasers.
Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing requires only local anesthesia. The skin to be treated simply needs a numbing cream applied before the procedure. Unlike many CO2 laser treatments, no intravenous sedation or injections are needed for Erbium skin resurfacing.
Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing is Safer for Darker Skin Tones
Most CO2 laser procedures are not recommended for darker skin tones – as the intense heat generated can result in increased pigmentation.
However, due to the decrease in the heat produced, Erbium Laser Skin Resurfacing can be used on darker skin types more safely.
