What to Know Before Getting Laser Hair Removal
Making informed choices, and knowing what to expect, can make any Med Spa procedure more enjoyable and successful.
As a leading provider of laser hair removal treatments in the Ann Arbor, MI area, we like to keep our patients informed. In this article, we discuss what you should know about getting laser hair removal treatments.
Laser Hair Removal is Less Painful than Waxing, Tweezing or Electrolysis
The sensation described during laser hair removal is like a rubber band snapping the skin. The pulsed light delivered by the laser is far less painful than waxing or electrolysis. The laser focuses simultaneously on multiple hair shafts, minimizing the amount of “snaps.”
Being in a relaxed state helps the body respond more positively and have less discomfort during any medical treatment. Our tranquil, luxurious, soft-lighted Med Spa, and our caring staff, will offer you a relaxing, pampering environment. You’ll be calm and stress-free during your laser hair removal treatment.
Advil or ibuprofen taken a half hour to an hour before the hair removal process can minimize any discomfort. Having a glass of wine before the treatment can also relax and calm nerves, making for “pain-free” hair removal. (In this case, remember to plan ahead for a ride home!)
Once the treatment is finished, the nurse, doctor or laser technician can apply an ice pack to numb any discomfort. A soothing lotion will be gently applied to the area to complete the session.
Preparing for Laser Hair Removal
On the day of your laser hair removal treatment it is best to avoid caffeine. Also, because menstruation can make skin more sensitive, schedule your appointment for when you’re not having your period.
Since laser hair removal works better on lighter skin, patients should avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen on the treatment area for three weeks before the appointment. Also, minor sunburn can cause discomfort during the laser treatment.
For a week before the hair removal treatment, don’t use any skin irritants or peels. These include retinol, glycolic acid or alpha & beta hydroxy acids.
Lastly, two to three days before the appointment, shave the area to be treated. This will give the laser less hair above the skin to “singe” – so it only heats the root of the hair below the skin.
Choose a Medical Spa for Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal is a permanent, powerful treatment which kills the hair root, not allowing the follicle to grow hair for years. Waxing only removes the hair shaft, allowing hair to grow back within weeks.
Because of the potency of laser hair removal, it should be performed using FDA approved equipment by licensed medical professionals in a medical spa, not a salon.
Our medical spa provides a luxurious, pampering environment with clinically sterile conditions for patient health and safety. Choosing a Medical Spa such as Medical Aesthetics Ann Arbor, with a licensed medical staff, ensures you will avoid infections, burns and other complications that can be caused when done by inexperienced, unskilled, or non-medical laser operators.
