Understanding IPL Photorejuvenation
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy is a “photofacial” skin treatment that uses an intense broad-spectrum beam of light to stimulate collagen production by targeting the dermis, the lower layer of skin. Targeting the dermis stimulates the skin rebuilding processes, including collagen growth, by “tricking” the dermis into repairing what it perceives to be a minor injury.
A single IPL photorejuvenation treatment can reduce or eliminate facial wrinkles and skin discoloration using high energy light waves. Successive, regularly scheduled treatments will make the results of IPL even more obvious. For the best results, five full-face IPL photorejuvenation sessions – three weeks apart – are often recommended. Even people with a busy schedule can find time for the quick IPL session, which requires no downtime.
IPL photorejuvenation can address multiple effects of aging simultaneously. In addition to stimulating collagen growth to eliminate wrinkles, IPL can improve skin color by removing and diffusing red spots, redness, acne and rosacea. It can also restore a smooth, even skin texture, closing large pores.
IPL is different from lasers, since lasers utilize a specific wavelength – whereas IPL uses a broad spectrum of light frequencies.
Who IPL Photorejuvenation Works Best For
Photorejuvenation works best on smoother, lighter skin tones. We offer other skin care treatments at our Ann Arbor Medical Spa that work better for darker skin tones.
Additionally, chemical peels and laser resurfacing are generally more effective solutions for patients with deeper lines and wrinkles, or serious acne scars.
One month prior to the photorejuvenation treatment, patients should avoid sun exposure and self-tanners. In order to minimize the reactions to the laser light, patients should also avoid minocycline, doxycycline, tetracycline, or Retin-A/Renova for a few weeks before the procedure.
Other Types of Photofacials
With so many treatments out there, it’s hard to know “which is which”. At our Ann Arbor Med Spa we are often asked by patients if fotofacial, photofacial, photorejuvenation and photodynamic therapy are all the same thing.
Fotofacial, photofacial and photorejuvenation are all facial treatments that stimulate collagen production by heating and stimulating the inner layer of skin (dermis), while protecting and cooling the outer layer of skin (epidermis).
These facial treatments are offered using varying methods, technology, manufacturers and procedures. Our Ann Arbor Med Spa offers Quanta IPL photorejuvenation – known to be among the most safe and effective IPL treatments available.
Photodynamic therapy, on the other hand, is a different process – which works by using a light source to activate a photosensitized compound that is applied to the skin.
IPL Photorejuvenation Safety
Patients who choose IPL photorejuvenation experience little to no discomfort during the procedure and normally no downtime after. It is one of the safest light-based skin treatment options available!
